Krishna Janmashtami is an annual celebration commemorating the birth of Krishna. It is celebrated on the 8th day of Bhadrapada month (August). Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva couple when they were imprisoned by Devaki’s brother, Kamsa.

Name Krishna is derived from Sanskrit word Krsna , which means "dark" or "dark blue.
Krishna is considered as an incarnation of Vishnu.

- Krishnashtami is also known as Gokulashtami, Ashtami Rohini, Saatam Atham, Sree Krishna Jayanthi.
- Hindus celebrate Krishna Janmashtami by fasting, worshiping Krishna and by performing Pooja.
- There is a game like ritual related to this occasion. It involves making a human pyramid and breaking an earthen pot of curd tied at a height.
This ritual is most popular in Maharashtra.
