Muharram is the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
The word Muharram means ‘Forbidden’ is derived from word ‘Haram’ which means ‘Sinful’
It is one among the 4 sacred months of Islam.
It is also referred as Al-Hijra.
The whole month is considered sacred. The 10th day is considered most significant because of the Battle of Karbala which happened on 622 A.D.
After the death of Muhammed , corruption has crept into the administration and society , which resulted in the battle of Karbala, which was fought between a group of Muhammad’s grandson Al-Husayn-ibn-Ali and the forces of Yazid Caliph. The forces of Husayn was completely defeated by the forces of Caliph. On the 10th of Muḥarram, Husayn was killed in Karbalā. (present-day Iraq). and that day is known as the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ commemorating his death.
Shia Muslims observe this day as a day of sorrow , at the same time Sunnis observe this as a day of the festival.
Many pray on this day charged with passion commemorating the martyrdom and sufferings underwent by Husayn and his family . Muslims are encouraged to fast on the 10th day Ashura and also on the 9th day of Muharram (Tasu'a) .

Doing charity and good work for the needy.
Fasting on the day of Ashura and also a day before.
